Can you get Spotify DJ for free? (And why it might not show up)
By Stationz.fm · · 6 min read

No, you can't get Spotify DJ on a free Spotify account. Spotify lists DJ as a Premium feature, and there's no free tier, setting or trick that unlocks it. The closest thing to free is Spotify's own Premium trial, if you haven't used one before.
Below: how to get Spotify DJ the official way, why it might be missing even when you pay for Premium, and free ways to get a DJ-style listening experience instead. All facts are as of October 2026, with sources linked.
How to get Spotify DJ
You need three things: a Premium plan, a country where DJ has launched, and an up-to-date Spotify app.
Premium. In the US, Premium Individual is $12.99 a month, Student is $6.99, Duo is $18.99 and Family is $21.99. Individual and Student plans come with one free month, but only if you haven't tried Premium before. That trial is the only legitimate way to use DJ without paying, and only for a month.
Where to find it. In the Spotify app, tap the DJ icon on Home, or search for "DJ". Spotify's help page also says you can tap the chat window in the Now Playing view while something is playing. Spotify's instructions are written for the iOS and Android apps, so start on your phone.
Once it's running, DJ builds its own lineup from your listening taste and talks between songs. It picks the music for you rather than narrating a playlist you chose.
Why Spotify DJ is not showing (even with Premium)
If you pay for Premium and still can't find DJ, it's usually one of these.
Your country doesn't have it yet
DJ isn't everywhere Spotify is. As of May 2026, Spotify says DJ is in over 75 markets, after adding Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, South Korea and Switzerland. Spotify itself is available in many more countries than that. Spotify hasn't published one complete list of DJ markets that we could find, so if you're outside the big launch countries, it may simply not be live for you yet.
Your language isn't supported
DJ speaks six languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese. Spotify's help page says it's available in "a limited number of languages". You can switch the DJ's language from the three-dot menu on the DJ card, but there's no Hebrew, Arabic or Japanese DJ, for example.
Your app is out of date
When Spotify announced its latest DJ expansion, it told listeners to "make sure your app is up to date". Update Spotify from the App Store or Google Play, then reopen it. Tech guides also suggest force quitting, clearing the cache or reinstalling if it still won't appear. Note that reinstalling removes your downloaded music.
You're not actually on Premium
It sounds obvious, but check your account page. If a trial ended, a payment failed, or you're signed in to a different account than you think, the app treats you as a free user and DJ disappears.
It's still a beta
Spotify says DJ is "still in beta". Features in beta can roll out unevenly. If you've checked everything above, Spotify's support community is the next stop.
Free ways to get a DJ-style experience
If you don't want to pay for Premium, or DJ isn't in your country or language, there are free options. None of them is a copy of Spotify DJ, so pick by what you actually want: a voice over your own music, or a station that runs itself.
Stationz: an AI DJ for your YouTube playlists (our product)
Full disclosure: Stationz is the product we make. It's a Chrome extension that adds an AI radio DJ to any YouTube playlist or mix on youtube.com. You open a playlist, switch on Stationz mode in Chrome's side panel, and a DJ introduces each song before it plays. The music dips while the DJ talks, then comes back up, like real radio. The DJ uses checked facts about the song and artist when they're available.
The free plan has two English DJs, Emma and Leo, with a calm tone and a choice of minimal or balanced talk. If you don't have a playlist ready, there are 37 ready-made stations to start from. Pro is $4.99 a month and adds 10 premium voices, 16 languages and a built-in ad blocker. See pricing for the details.
The honest limits: Stationz works only in desktop Chrome. It isn't a phone app, and it doesn't run inside the YouTube Music app on your phone. If you mostly listen on the go, it won't help there. Our step-by-step guide shows how to set it up, and our Stationz vs Spotify DJ page compares the two side by side.
AIRadio
AIRadio runs 24/7 themed stations where an AI host picks the songs and talks between them. It's free with no signup, on the web and iPhone, per its site. You don't choose the playlist, but you also don't have to set anything up.
YouTube Music's Beyond the Beat (if you can get in)
YouTube has been testing two AI hosts, Mo and Flow, who chat between songs in the YouTube Music app. It's a free YouTube Labs experiment, but it's limited to a small group of US participants, mainly Premium subscribers. So it's "free" only if you already pay for YouTube Premium and get picked. More in our Beyond the Beat guide.
Amazon Music with Alexa+
Alexa+ in Amazon Music is open to US listeners on every tier, including free. You can ask it about artists and have it build playlists. It doesn't talk between songs, though, so it's a smart music assistant rather than a radio host. It's phone only.
Plain old radio
If what you like about Spotify DJ is a voice between songs, a real radio station does that for free and always has. You give up choosing the music, but you get a human with taste. Apple Music Radio, for example, has live shows with hosts like Zane Lowe.

So, which should you do?
- You already like Spotify and haven't tried Premium: take the free month and see if DJ is worth $12.99 to you.
- You have Premium but no DJ: check your country, your language and your app version, in that order.
- You want a DJ over your own playlists on a computer, free: try Stationz.
- You want a station that just plays: AIRadio, or your favorite radio station.
